What Does “Therapeutic-Grade Essential Oil” Mean?

Most places that sell essential oil use the phrase “therapeutic grade” in their marketing… but what does it really mean? Well, first of all, most of the time even the vendors themselves don’t have a clear idea of what it should mean because they are just repeating it because they are expected to say it in order for consumers to feel they have found a quality source. It should be true, but it often isn’t. What it really means is that the vital essence oils (called essential oils) from aromatic plants have been obtained by natural steam distillation (or cold pressing for citrus oils) as opposed to being obtained in different ways, either with pressurized distillation which fractures the molecules of the oil, or some kind of chemical solvent, in which case it will probably be called an absolute, which is mostly used for perfume making. If your vendor cannot actually explain that to you in plain English when you call them on the phone then they have no idea what they are doing, and therefore no understanding of whether they have quality product or not.
